Thank you

T and I have been very busy the past few weeks. We are working on several design projects as well as filming a new show, which sadly leaves very little time for other things. We will also be starting a new “project” shortly, which will require us being abroad for a longer period of time. That is why we have decided to discontinue our blog here on TV3’s homepage.

We have really enjoyed sharing our “adventures” with you and I want to thank you all for the wonderful comments you have sent. The blog has been a great way of keeping in touch with you, as well as an excellent forum for sharing thoughts and ideas.

Though we are discontinuing our blog because of time constraints, we truly want to stay in touch as well as continue sharing our latest news. We will do this on our Facebook page.

Once again, thank you to you all. T and I look forward to seeing you on Facebook.

What a weekend

Well this has been a funny weekend, on friday we had the boys castrated (Pooter needed it for medical reasons) so the evening was spent wearing plastic lampshades so they could not lick the stitches. How I felt guilty, they looked ridiculous and obviously felt very sorry for themselves.

However they have both made a very good recovery and seem to have forgotten about the whole thing.

Sunday was spent mostly working on designs for the new TV show we are filming at the moment, not swedens Ugliest Homes but a new concept. I am hoping it will be a great show.

Then out for a whirl on the boat, cold but glorious, a really good way to clear the head.

Now it is back to the treadmill.

How to get inspiration and some practical tips

People often ask us about interior design tips. It’s an occupational hazard. One of the most frequent questions is where to find inspiration. T and I find much of our inspiration on our travels and international hotels are always a great source.

Another great source for inspiration are international design magazines (I prefer The World of Interiors and British House and Garden). Before we meet with new clients we always ask them to go out and buy as many of these magazines as possible.

When you get home, sit back with a nice cup of coffee or a refreshing gin and tonic and start going through them. Mark the furniture, interiors, lighting, accessories, etc. that you like with post-its. This is the first step in finding an interior design scheme, and style, that you enjoy and that works for you.

When you think you have a found a scheme that you enjoy I always think it’s a good idea to create a mood board. Cut out the pictures that you like, and compliment them with fabric samples and colour swatches. Then paste everything on the board. This will bring your ideas together. It takes time and energy but I promise it will be a great source of inspiration, as well as help you when putting your scheme into realization.

Another Friday

It has been a very busy week, but as always there is time for a Friday Question and Answer session:

Helena
Skål to you too and have a wonderful weekend .

Eva
Thank you. I hope you enjoy Country House Rescue as much as I do.

William
So glad you enjoy the show. The American ambassador and his wife are tuly lovely people.

Jennifer & Johanna
Thank you for your interest. Sadly we are not able to take in anyone as a praktikant because of time constraints. Good luck with everything.

Johanna
Glad you liked what we did at Carolina Gynning’s place. The lamp and side table are both available at London W8

Fredrik
Not exactly sure what you mean by having a white apartment and having colours on the wall? Is your furniture white? If so go for colour on the walls. In regards to minimalism, there are many different ways of interpreting the term. Not being a minimalist myself I suggest doing a little research, starting here:

Karin
Thank you - compliments are always welcome, and enjoyed.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Interview and wine tasting

It has been very busy the past few weeks. I promise we will update you all soon on everything that is going on and our future plans. In the meantime I thought I would share some pictures from an interview we did on Tuesday for an upcoming edition of a wine club magazine. Of course wine tasting was a part of the interview and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Country House Rescue

I am not a big television viewer, but I have to say one of the most enjoyable shows on right now is
Country House Rescue. Anyone who has been to the UK knows the nation is scattered with large country homes, manors and castles. These buildings are truly a part of Britain’s cultural heritage.

In the show the fantastic Ruth Watson visits these stately homes to help the owners not only get a grip on their economy but also try to help them earn an income from their dwellings (substantial taxes along with maintenance make these homes quite costly to run). Of course not all the participants welcome Ruth’s practical suggestions -  usually the older conservative generations or lazy younger heirs. This gives the show a rather humorous aspect.

I understand wanting to maintain privacy, but one has to be practical as well. I mean if you are living in a ruin, and can’t afford the upkeep, maybe you need to consider running a B&B and hosting weddings in order to keep the place.

Not all the homes are derelict though. Some are in pretty good condition and from a design point of view I enjoy some of these classic British interiors. There is nothing like having a nice gin and tonic in the east wing drawing room.

TGIF

Well it is Friday again, thank god, and only 2 days left to the election. T has become totally boring on the subject and I cannot get him to put down the newspaper. I on the other hand think the orange Alliansen has chosen to be a little too earthy; perhaps it could have been a bit brighter.

A quiet weekend ahead, dinner with my good friend Juan tomorrow and I am sure I will just have enough energy for a glass of wine although was out for dinner last night and am not feeling 100% wonderful right now.

I have been looking at some of the fika rooms that have been coming in to the Jede competition……….what in the hell are people thinking with their interior design schemes. The result of throwing a hand grenade into the room would have been more successful

Busy week filming so nice to have a day off in the office although I am not being terribly productive.

And on a final note, here is quick Q&A session:

Anna
My tip is to choose colours that you really like. Look through your closet and see which colour dominates your wardrobe. It may just be your favorite. Then paint your walls (not only a fondvägg) and and then choose curtains that compliment that colour. One important thing about curtains is to make sure they reach the floor. There are a lot of good companies out there that can help you with curtains. Just google “gardiner”.

I think too many people fall into the trap of not doing any research to see what is out there. My top suggestion though is to go and buy some foreign design magazines and see how colour can actually change a room. If you buy a Swedish magazine though you will have plenty of useful tips on how to paint your home white!!!!

Helena
Sadly we can’t really go into detail about what we are filming right now. But we promise to let everyone know as soon as we can. Both here and on Facebook.

Mary
I can understand that you would want a more efficient wood burning stove. Try to get one that reflects the décor. There are plenty “old fashioned” stoves out there. Alternatively do what you want and do not listen to anyone else, anybody that complains about your decision can be removed from the Christmas card list easily with a thick, black pen.

Saerab
You can find more information about how we work at our website.

Sabina
I think you should enter your white and boring fikarum in the Jede contest.

Madeleine
I think the best thing you can do is try to find a job or praktikplats at an interior design firm. It is the best way to learn about design as well as the business aspect  (which is a huge part). Good luck. But I would also suggest developing a really good knowledge about lighting, drawing, space planning, colours etc etc. Many people think interior design is about cushions and curtains which it is not. I spend 70% of my time dealing with technical issues of renovation, site meetings with builders and clients, 20% on paperwork and 10% on design.

Wiveka
I don’t think one necessarily has to have the same theme and style throughout the entire house. But they should definitely complement each other. There has to be a red thread, for example an accent colour, the type of lighting in each room or curtain style.

Last nights dinner

T & I were invited to the American ambassadors residence last night for dinner and it was such fun. The ambassador and his wife are extraordinarily nice people, the house was full of art and there we perhaps 20 of us invited. The ambassador was a very close part of Obama’s election team and I was lucky enough to sit next to him. A very cool evening.

Have been out filming all day…….in the rain and on the way back ran into my good friend Kattis Ahlström, she is also another extremely nice person.

Am now feeling exhausted from all this mingling.

Questions and Answers

Wiveka
I do understand your point about using white, yes sometimes it works and other times it does not. As I always say though make an active choice, taking into consideration the style of the house, what else is going into the room, what type of atmosphere are you trying to create.

S

However a common misconception with the “New England look” is that everything needs to be in white. The New England look encompasses many different colours ranging from pastels to bolder hues. The colours used find their inspiration from colours which were available, and produced, during the American colonial period.

I also think if you want the New England look then do some research. There is more to a New England look than fishing net, star and stripe cushions and a wooden bird on the fönster bänk.

Nice
Thank you, it is always nice to hear that you are liked, especially on a lousy day and before macaroni cheese.

Jennie
You are correct, the next day was much better.

Johanna
No applications are currently being accepted to “Sveriges Fulaste Hem” as there are no plans to film the show this autumn.

B-M
I am glad you appreciated our Q&A sessions. We really enjoy answering readers questions

Sara
Thank you for all the interesting questions about being a programledare. You will have your answers shortly.

That is it from the front line, have managed to fit in a hair cut which is novel.

Do you have an ugly fikarum?

T and have visited many offices in our years as interior designers and it never ceases to amaze me how little effort goes into the fikarum. They are ghastly…….vepor, plastic floors, hideous wallpaper, dismal lighting. All very odd considering the fikarum is a Swedish institution!!

It’s supposed to be a place to relax and enjoy a good gossip about Karl-Erik in accounting and the way he dresses.

Do you have an ugly fikarum at work? If so be sure to check out Jede’s contest site as you could win a makeover.
